Action Ensues for Freshmen Eligibles

By Frank & Ray Cotolo

As September 2010 debuted, frosh-filly trotters were going strong in sires stakes at Freehold and Monticello.

On Sept. 1, while non-eligible Chocolatier’s filly Pilgrims Truffles made headlines, another Chocolatier filly, Seduced By Chocolate, who is "Crown" eligible, broke and will have to start again. Baby I’m Bad News also miscued along the way in the $100,000 championship.

At Monticello that same afternoon, Tap Tap Dance was a big favorite and won, paying $3.30 in a New York Sires Stakes leg worth $39,000-plus. Other eligibles unsuccessful in the field were Temper Of Will, Epona Blue Chip and Miss Sue V.

Conwayslassie also took another step toward getting to Pocono with a win, paying $6.10. Unable to rally to get on the board were Jewel Ave and Carme Blue Chip.

There were two other splits for the division at Monticello and eligibles in both were out of the money, including Oakiedokie Hanover, Cameo Credit, Wannawinner and Sweet Possession.

Yonkers hosted four divisions of New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) for frosh-filly pacers on Aug. 31 and Crown-aiming gals won both divisions.

City Delight took the first $59,000-plus race and paid $5.50 as an expected top finisher. Angelwithanattitude and Cindiana Jones finished out of it.

A surprise in the other split came from JK Owhatanite, as she beat the field including two other eligibles and paid $18.80. Second was Dreamlands Roxy and third was New Album.

The first two events were non-betting affairs. See You At Peelers took one of them, with Character Flaw third and Hawaiian Hottie out of the money. In that race, Drop The Ball’s blues continued when she broke and was eliminated.

In the other, My Girl’s A Star and Asteria Blue Chip were not in the money.

On Aug. 30 at Yonkers, a few eligibles in the soph-filly pace class raced in lucrative divisions of the NYSS.

Only one Crown hopeful won. The third $92,000-plus division went to Hula’s Z Tam, the overwhelming favorite. Two eligibles in the first split were Chatty Kathy, third at 49-1, and Mrs. Alice, who was off the board. Max’s Leading Lady raced in the second split, and was out of the money at 15-1.
