Some Eligibles Maintain Hope

By Frank & Ray Cotolo

On Saturday, Sept. 25, Breeders Crown eligibles were not so easily found around North America. The time to contemplate a decision on entering a horse is running out rapidly. No doubt many of the eligibles’ connections have already made up their minds but some are still dawdling as the last weekend before the Tuesday deadline approaches.

At Indiana Downs, several Crown eligibles laid down a final performance before entry deadline on Tuesday. Breeders Crown hopeful Triumphant Caviar turned in a track-record performance Saturday night in the $100,000 Pride In Progress for free-for-all trotters in 1:53.1. Trained by Chris Beaver and driven by co-owner Luc Ouellette, the the four-year-old son of SJ’s Caviar strolled to a nearly 10 length victory in preparation for the $600,000 Breeders Crown Trot.

The anticipated return of Il Villagio took place in the $200,000 Oliver Trotting Classic at Indiana Downs. The much-touted frosh-colt trotter who was injured and sat out the entire season up until now finished eighth in a field of 10 at the mile track. Race winner Powerful Speed is not a Crown-eligible those in the race who were included Kash’s Caviar who was third and Baximum, who finished last.

There was no official word if Il Villagio would have his name dropped into the box for a “Crown” elimination spot under any circumstances.

Breeders Crown eligible So Perfect used a 27.4 final panel to dash to a 1-1/4-length victory in the Kentuckiana Stallion Management Stakes in 1:56.1. She will join undefeated stable mate See You At Peelers, as Crown possibilities. Trained by Jimmy Takter and driven by Dave Palone, the Western Ideal-So Perfect filly pushed ahead of leader Foxy Lady, with Mystical MJ closing late for third. So Perfect, half of a Brittany Farms entry, went off at 6-1.

At Yonkers, the Night of Champions super card of eight $200,000 state-bred finals featured three Crown-bound winners. The aforementioned See You At Peelers ran her win streak to 11, equaling the track record for two-year-old freshman pacing fillies. The daughter of Bettors Delight was an easy winner in 1:54.2.
