| Saturday’s Cavalcade of Eligibles By Frank & Ray Cotolo A herd of Breeders Crown eligibles was strewn across North America’s east on Saturday, Sept. 18. No doubt some hopes were dowsed among the many still dreaming of the big show, now less than three weeks away. ![]() Lucky Chucky Foremost in the mix was the $1-million Canadian Trotting Classic at Mohawk, where Hambo-winner Muscle Massive took on many of the foes he defeated in the August classic. However, it was Lucky Chucky, who gave in to "Massive" in the Hambo stretch, that used strength and stamina to win as the dead-on favorite. On the soaking-from-rain surface, Break The Bank K, sharper than ever lately, took second with Massive holding on for third over Temple Of Doom. Also racing were Hard Livin, Hes A Dream, Text Me, Coco Lindy, Take My Picture and Pilgrim’s Taj, who broke again. Also at Mohawk, frosh-colt trotters, some next year’s Hambo hopefuls, took flight in the William Wellwood. Jimmy Takter’s pair of top earners, Pastor Stephen and Leader Of The Gang finished first and third, respectively, with Broad Bahn second. Neal was fourth and the only other "Crown" eligible in the field. Frosh-filly trotters at Mohawk competed in the Peaceful Way Final but the eligibles finished third—Lady Rainbow—and worse: Hey Mister, Martiniontherocks, Oh Sweet Baby, Musclemad and As Ya’ll Like It. Finally at Mohawk, Dreamfair Eternal was a healthy 2-1 winning the Milton Stakes elim, with Milton defending-champ Southwind Temp second, On The Glass Third and last eligible Ginger And Fred fourth. New Jersey Sires Stakes at Freehold on Saturday afternoon presented some eligibles in frosh-filly and colt paces and soph-colt paces. The gal youngsters offered a winner with Emilio’s Stride, surprising the crowd with a $47.60 win mutuel. Rockratese, Honky Tonk Woman and Show The World had no impact on the race. In the other mile, Buck Stops Here got second, with I Kill Time, Capri Hanover, Music Row and Rocklamation out of it. The young boys’ single split went to Foreclosure N as the favorite, with Risk Factor, Joe Pa’s PE III and Howard’s Rock unproductively finishing. The soph-colt split was another shocker, with Mighty Art winning and paying $48. Pike Hanover, another longshot, took second. Most of this was due to the 1-9 favorite, Tobago Cays, breaking and literally running out of the money. New York’s half-mile tracks were teeming with New York Sires Stakes divisions and had their share of eligibles making some marks. Batavia Downs hosted four soph-colt trot divisions in the $35,000 neighborhood each. Three were won by eligibles familiar to those who followed the Hambletonian Trail earlier this year. Stimulus ($8.10) won a split, with Marion Monaco and Big Stick Lindy chasing. Winning Fireworks ($3.20) defeated Shaq Is Back, who was second, with Folk Tail watching from behind. And Whata Winner ($8.30) won with Carbon Footprint third. In the other mile, Celebrity Bluechip was second over Waldorf Hall. The freshman trotting gals had one eligible win: Conwaylassie, a favorite. Sweet Possession was second and Pretty As My Mom took up the rear. In the other chapter, Wannawinner was third, followed by Cameo Credit and Oakiedokie Hanover. Saratoga’s pair of frosh-colt paces for state-breds, $69,000-plus-worth, resulted in one third for an eligible—Bombay Away—and one also-raced, One On Each Lap. Finally, Indiana Downs’ Circle City series was the showcase for a few eligibles. One of the them, Four Starzzz Z, won, with entry mate Con Game second and Ideal Joe out of the money. In another "Circle" event, Best Man Hanover placed.
